Citizen engagement in climate adaptation processes: lessons learned from Adaptation AGORA and CLIMAS’ experiences webinar

By April 17, 2025No Comments

On April 9, 2025 an engaging and insightful webinar co-organized with the EU Mission Adaptation brought together stakeholders from across Europe to reflect on the critical role of citizen engagement in advancing climate change adaptation strategies. While citizen participation is widely recognized as a cornerstone of successful adaptation, mobilizing meaningful and sustained involvement remains a challenge for many decision-makers and practitioners.

Together with the CLIMAS project, our project had the opportunity to share our experiences and results from implementing innovative participatory approaches designed to foster public involvement. Both our projects focus on co-creation, co-production, co-design, and co-implementation of adaptation actions, empowering local communities to take an active role in shaping their climate-resilient futures.

The event featured outcomes and lessons learned from:

  • Adaptation AGORA pilot projects in Rome, Zaragoza, Malmö, and Dresden
  • CLIMAS Climate Assemblies held in Catalunya (Spain), Riga (Latvia), and Edermünde (Germany)

Participants gained valuable insights into the practical tools, frameworks, and methodologies that have proven effective in generating community interest, strengthening local ownership, and driving impactful adaptation processes across diverse European contexts.

The event highlighted not only the importance of citizen involvement, but also the potential for these participatory models to be scaled and replicated across other regions.
